most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

Also look into a free anti-virus (open-source, long time to download, and sort of long time to download updates) called clam. (You'll find that clam also imposes itself as a popup logo whenever you run Outlook, if you do.) Two possibilities. If you want the best free antivirus currently out there that is high detection and removal then avira antivir personal free is the best choice. If you want a simple basic protection then go with what others suggest - AVG free. If you are a computer expert then avast home edition is for you. It is a good free antivirus but has generates more false positives than any other antivirus.

On firewalls, Online armor free and comodo firewall pro free are the best even besting commercial ones on matousec tests (one of the more trusted independent testers even of firewall companies). If you want it simple then kerio firewall 4 or ghostwall should be enough.
AVG free AV is very popular but it's hard to understand why as it has poor detection rates and big gaps in the protection it provides. AVG by Grisoft is definitely NOT "The Best". Unfortunately one of the things it is not the best at, is doing what is is supposed to do, detecting viruses!

Regarding anti virus / anti spy ware programmes, none of them are 100% fool proof. They need to be constantly updated via internet. You must also know that updates will be released by the vendor only after viruses starts infecting the system.

The best way to protect your system is by good browsing habits.

Any anti virus scanner will do the job as long as you keep them up to date with antivirus definitions. I personally would pump for zone alarm which comes with an excellent antivirus and security feature. It has a free version also.

PC Tools Antivirus is not a very bad program. It has a background scanner and daily updates (which can sometimes get annoying), and you can choose which type of scan to do. However, the scans are not always very thorough and do not detect malicious programs that infect the registry. You can use it as your default scanner, but you'd still have to be careful.
i'd get AVG it's free and a very good anti-virus. you might also want a good anti-spyware tool like Ad-Aware as well

For the spyware question. Try Google Spyware Doctor. It's brand new from Google and it is free. I ran it recently and it found a lot more spy ware than other programs that I had such as Ad-ware. You can get it on Google.com.
